A fantastic result for Nicolae Cojocaru, an Oldmeldrum based sports person, who secured a silver medal for GBR Team and Team Scotland at the international XXXI Kristjan Palusalu Wrestling Tournament held in Tallin, Estonia.
In his first match at the tournament, Nicolae beat Israel with a score of 15:11, followed shortly after by a second win against Finland. His overall achievements saw Nicolae win a silver medal for GBR Team and Team Scotland.
The Inverurie Youth Sports Foundation (IYSF) is supporting Nicolae Cojocaru with funding to enable him to compete at an international level and to represent both Scotland and GB. The grant will help assist in training and preparation for forthcoming international competitions.
Now settled and living in Scotland, Nicolae Cojocaru has been wrestling for a number of years competing at a number of world championships with his most recent placing of 20th in 2016. He is passionate about the sport and dedicated to improving his ranking within the wrestling arena. As well as competing, he holds a Master’s degree in Sports Science and puts his experience and qualifications to good use in providing training and encouragement to children and teenagers in the Inverurie area wanting to learn more about wrestling.
Nicolae was really pleased to have secured funding from IYSF saying: “having funding from IYSF will help greatly in helping me to build my sports coaching experience, and also towards my competition preparation for major sporting events.” Gary Wilson, IYSF Secretary, commented: "On behalf of the IYSF, we are delighted with Nicolae’s recent silver medal at the international XXXI Kristjan Palusalu Wrestling Tournament, being able to support young sports persons to develop and compete at international and global sporting events is one of the foundation’s goals. We want to support and encourage talented young sports people from the Garioch area to reach their sporting goals.”
